Issue #53

Editor's Message [by Richard Smith]

Hello all and happy November! As we move closer to 2015 I have to say that I am impressed with how well 2014 has gone for the Outpost. If you haven’t noticed Trivia is back up and running, Simming is taking to the final frontier once again. Avatars have been cleaned up, the Blue Report on Facebook has taken off like wildfire, and there is a ton of behind the scenes work going on. Though the community may look quiet at times, there is definitely activity going on. For that we have you to thank. Thanks for being such great patrons.

This month we have some good stuff for you. Numbers talks to our former Commander in Chief, HAL about the little known Outpost Funding crew. Rob Atkins brings you another Tastes of the Outpost. Our new Assistant Editor, Paulie has a movie review and updates on the Blue Report on Facebook. It’s a jam packed issue.

Thanks for taking some time to read. See you in December!

HAL Review [by Mr Numbahs]

HOW TO DONATE + WHERE IT GOES by HAL

So here's how it works. When you make a donation on the front page it goes to a PayPal account that Iain and I have access to. From there I transfer the money as needed to a bank account to make payments. Part of the responsibility split that Iain and I share at OTF is that I handle the financial side of things and that's been the case since we took over seven years ago. All donations made through that form go 100% towards paying for hosting with any extra amount being held in reserve against a future date when there isn't as much money coming in.

And to be perfectly honest there isn't as much coming in as there once was. It's not as big of a problem as it once was though as we're able to operate OTF at a fraction of the cost that it once incurred before I took over from Andrew Maxwell. We've managed to keep the lights on and keep a healthy buffer for some time now, and we're always looking for new ways to stretch the OTF dollars even more.

Special Thanks to HAL for giving me a slice of his time to better explain the donation process. Donations help! Keep that in mind!

Blue Report on Facebook Recap [by Paulie, Assistant Editor]

There were just a few items of note in the Blue Report in October. The rumors of a Captain Worf TV series are beginning to circulate again. Guardians Of The Galaxy will be making the transition from the big to small screen, undoubtedly to set up the movie sequel that’s already in the works.

Space.com, of all places, reported that at New York Comic Con there was an announcement that the actors from the cult hit Firefly will lend their voices to an online game set in the Firefly universe. Nathan Fillion and Morena Baccarin are particularly excited for the game’s development. Now where’s my browncoat?

Warwick Davis is reported to be returning to a galaxy far, far away once again for Star Wars VII. Marvel’s “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” trailer was released ahead of schedule. We at the Blue Report are sure that Hydra had something to do with it.

IO9.com released a story in which the powers that be behind the SyFy Channel admitted they screwed up, straying from their traditional programming, and a pledge to return to what the network was known for. The cover of Entertainment Weekly revealed what the characters in Terminator: Genisys will look like, including former Doctor Who star Matt Smith, whose character is reported to be an ally of John Connor.

On Screen movie Review: Dracula Untold [by Paulie, Assistant Editor]

In this review, I stray from what modern science fiction has become, and revisit its roots, in honor of Halloween. I recently saw Dracula Untold in theaters, and enjoyed every minute of it. It was an origin story of sorts, for how the Transylvanian prince known as Vlad The Impaler became the legendary vampire Count Dracula.

Filmed in Northern Ireland, the story weaved by Matt Sazama ad Burk Sharpless, filmed by Gary Shore in his directorial debut fleshes out and fictionalizes Vlad’s historic response to Sultan Mehmet’s (Dominic Cooper) invasion of his homeland in the spring of 1462. The story starts out with a narration by Vlad’s son Ingeras, as if he is the one telling the story about how his father became known as Count Dracula.

Vlad wants to keep the Turks from his home, and keep Mehmet from taking his son and making him a soldier. He gains the ability to defend his home and family after a visit to a Master Vampire (Charles Dance) who lives in a cave, and has made himself known to Vlad in accordance to prophecy.

Dance’s character converts Vlad to something of a proto-vampire, explaining that if he resists the urge to give into his bloodlust for three days, he will retain his mortality. If Vlad does give in, he will be a vampire for all eternity, with control over the weather, darkness, and bats. Does Vlad now have what it takes to free his family and land from the sultan? Or will he become a vampire, forced to live forever without them? If you want to know the answer, then I suggest you go to the theater. I give this movie four stars.
