Chatting at Outpost 10F

How do I chat?

That's the problem that troubles every new visitor (newbie). This document has been created to provide some answers and insight. This document will not explain how the chat works exactly; however, this document will provide some insight in some things you should know when chatting at OTF.

This document is divided into a few sections:

Icons & Images:

All chats use certain icons, insignia and images to indicate affiliation, rank, etc. Those icons are explained here.

All personnel have chosen a certain affiliation. That is Star Trek, Star Wars or Fantasy. Each have an according icon. You will find these icons on pages like the Personnel listing and at promotion announcements.

The Star Trek Icon
The Star Wars Icon
The Fantasy Icon
Global OTF Icon, Admirality & Quadrant Commander

All ranks have certain insignia. The crewman rank has none. Ranks are indicated by "pips" The Star Trek insignia and their explanations can be found here.

Chat visitors can use smileys, or emoticons, to express their emotional state in chat. They amplify and underline the chat posts and using them can avoid misunderstandings. There are a few smileys available for everyone. Each smiley has a different code, such as :).

To learn more about smileys, visit the Smiley Database.

Choosing Genres:

It is important to know the destinction between the three factions. Although members from the chats work together in global departments, different rules apply in the three chats. And of course the atmosphere is different too.

Important: The Prime Directives, the general ruleset, applies everywhere!

One could notice the site looks more "Trekkish" than Star Wars or Fantasy like. That's understandable, considering the history of Outpost 10F, briefly described here.

A new member chooses a faction upon registration, and then is bound to that faction. This does not mean that member cannot visit the other chats, but he or she has one rank and he or she can only get promoted at his/her own faction chat. When the globalization was first realised, before Alder Hill existed, a member's rank was displayed in yellow, but when visiting the other faction's chat, their rank color was changed to gray, indicating the member belonged to the other faction. This is now no longer the case and all ranks are displayed in yellow. The occupants listing now provides insight into the chat visitor's faction.

Should a disturbance occur, a visiting member at the other factions' chat is only allowed to intervein when there are no Senior Officers of Security Officers of the faction present. Visiting Seniors of the other factions do not outrank lower Seniors or Security officers when it comes to handling situations, where they normally would do.

Finding your way around:

Since 1997, a lot has changed at Outpost 10F. It has grown larger and larger. Information about all aspects of the chat and information and products of all the departments are available online. To help you find them, there are a few search engines and useful sites for you to use:

Sometimes the best way to find something, is to ask a fellow member in chat. Especially the Senior Officers, the more experienced officers, can tell you where to find a certain site or function.
