Airponics Bay:

Like hydroponics, airponics is the science of growing plants without soil. In the case of airponics, this is accomplished by delivering dissolved nutrients to the roots and leaves through a mist suspension. Plants are held in a flexible framework which allows their roots to hang freely, but gives the plants adequate support to grow upright.

Most Terran plants (with the exclusion of Bromeliflorae) are not designed to take in large amounts of water through their leaves. One does not, naturally, wish to clog one's breathing apparatus with fluid. However, the vaporators in airponic systems produce the nutrient mist in such fine particles that the mist can be absorbed by both the roots and leaves without disturbing the CO2/O2 exchange. This allows photosynthesis to take place freely and even more efficiently than if nutrients were gathered by the roots alone.

Critics argue that because the nutrients are still being delivered by water (mist) that technically, the term "airponics" isn't really accurate. It's also argued that the technology required is too elaborate, and one can grow plants more economically and just as cleanly with modern hydroponic trays. One cannot, however, argue with results. Time and time again tests have shown that airponics systems can grow healthier plants with stronger leaves and bigger fruit.

In the late part of the 24th century, people have become increasingly attracted to the idea of growing their own food. This in turn helps save on energy costs. And according to some, a replicated fruit can never match the taste of a real, naturally grown one. The Outpost 10F Airponics bay provides residents with fresh fruits and vegetables.
