Promotions
What Are Promotions?
Outpost 10F uses a ranking system as a method of coordination and management. A community member
moves up our rank ladder (composed of 12 clearance levels) via promotions
by visiting our chatrooms on a regular basis, following the Prime Directives,
and participating in our departments.
As one progresses in rank one solidifies a presence within the Outpost
10F community and gains access to more site functions. Such functions
include the armory, Outpost 10F Command Headquarters, the updates boards,
and much more. One also gains the ability of having more say in the
day to day operations of Outpost 10F and its departments.
This might include leading departmental projects, submitting promotion
recommendations, or becoming a departmental manager.
The ranking system rewards those members who display enthusiasm, dedication
and impeccable conduct and allows them to become more involved in Outpost
10F.
Although one earns access rights as one increases in rank, promotions should always be
considered secondary to enjoying the atmosphere at Outpost 10F.
The following areas are covered in this document:
Clearance Levels and Ranks
One's rank at Outpost 10F is based on one's clearance level and will manifest
itself in different ways throughout the community.
Clearance Levels
There are 12 clearance levels used at Outpost 10F - clearance level 1 represents an
unregistered member while clearance level 12 represents the Commander-in-Chief of
Outpost 10F. One's access rights and privileges are based on one's clearance
level; one increases in clearance level when one is promoted.
Ranks
One's rank is simply denoted as one's clearance level (following one's registered
screen name) in all areas of Outpost 10F except while a member is in
a chatroom. When in a chatroom one's rank is based on the affiliation
chosen upon login (i.e. Starfleet, Klingon, Imperial, Rebel, etc.) and
the clearance level possessed. The rank
chart illustrates the chatroom ranks obtained based on the affiliation
selected and a given clearance level.
Rank Classes
The 12 clearance levels are separated into three different rank classes:
- The Junior Class consists of clearance levels 1-4.
- The Senior Class consists of clearance levels 5-8.
- The Flag Class consists of clearance levels 9-12.
Each class has a different set of promotion criteria - these criteria are explained
in detail below.
Requirements for a Junior Promotion
In order to become promoted to a junior rank you must abide by the following
criteria:
- You must be respectful to and tolerant of all community members.
- You must be honest and help maintain the well being of the community.
- You must visit the chatrooms on a regular basis.
In addition to the above, we also require that those moving to a junior
rank complete a standard term. Terms vary based on the rank one is trying
to achieve:
| Clearance Level |
Minimum Term at Previous Rank |
Minimum Chat Time |
Minimum Chat Entrances |
Recommendations Needed |
| CL 1 - CL 2 |
via registration |
N/A |

| CL 2 - CL 3 |
1 month |
8 hours |
8 times |

| CL 3 - CL 4 |
2 months |

Although this is the case, note that simply completing a term does NOT automatically
mean one will be promoted. This is simply the minimum amout of time
one must serve at a given clearance level;
the Commander-in-Chief with input from the respecitve Sector Commander
ultimately decides when one is ready based on all requirements
for junior rank.

Requirements for a Senior Promotion
To be promoted to a senior rank you must be actively involved in the day to
day operations of Outpost 10F. This constitutes as departmental work,
impeccable conduct and a good relationship with our membership base. Regular
attendance and good behaviour are no longer the sole requirements for
a promotion; you must show your leadership skills and the ability
to work in a team environment.
Senior ranks are not easy to earn. We are quite particular when it
comes to issuing such promotions as a great deal of responsibility is
associated with the rank. Senior officers are the ones who lead departmental
efforts and projects; they are expected to be community leaders and
organizers. Senior officers also submit promotion recommendations for fellow
members on a monthly basis. For this reason not everyone will earn a senior rank. Only
those who have worked hard and have had results to show for their
efforts will be considered. If you visit the chatrooms on a regular
basis, are friendly and respect the rules but don't fulfill the above
requirements, the highest rank you will be able to achieve is clearance
level 4.
In short, in order to become promoted to a senior rank you must abide by the following
criteria:
- You must be respectful to and tolerant of all community members.
- You must be honest and help maintain the well being of the community.
- You must be an active member of a department.
- You must visit the chatrooms on a regular basis.
In addition to the above, we also require that those moving to a senior rank
complete a standard term. Terms vary based on the rank one is trying to achieve:
| Clearance Level |
Minimum Term at Previous Rank |
Minimum Chat Time |
Minimum Chat Entrances |
| CL 4 - CL 5 |

| CL 5 - CL 6 |

12 times |
| CL 6 - CL 7 |

8 hours |
8 times |
| CL 7 - CL 8 |

Although this is the case, note that simply completing a term does NOT automatically
mean one will be promoted. This is simply the minimum amout of time one must serve at
a given rank; the Commander-in-Chief with input from the respective Sector Commander
ultimately decides when one is ready based on all requirements for senior rank.

Also note:
- Departmental structure dictates that the department executive (Senior and Assistant
Managers) hold or share the highest ranks in the department. Usually
the highest rank an executive can reach is Rank Level 8, despite the
time served as that rank. This structure causes a cascade effect through
the the department, making it difficult for any other department member
to move past the highest ranked executive (as they would technically be leapfrogging
the executive).
Requirements for a promotion to Flag Rank
To be promoted to Flag Rank one must have the personal backing of the Commander-in-Chief, Vice Commander, Quadrant Commander, and all other currently active Flag Staff. There are no set requirements for Flag Rank but to be considered one must have made significant contributions to the community over the course of several years.

Promotion Procedures
Promotions are issued at the end of each calendar month. The following process is used:
Beginning on the 21st day of each month the Promotion Information System (PIS) accepts promotion recommendations from our Senior Officers. All Senior Officers are automatically emailed and instructed to submit recommendations for those they feel are ready for an advancement in rank.
Senior Officers log into the PIS and view a list of members who have achieved their rank terms. The Senior Officers select from this list the members they feel are ready to move up in rank providing their comments where appropriate.
The PIS closes to recommendations on the 26th day of the month.
The Sector Commanders review the recommendations and approve/deny promotions for the members within their respective genre.
The Quadrant Commander reviews all promotions approved by the Sector Commanders and either backs the approval or denies it. In the case of denying a promotion approval the Quadrant Commander will leave an explanation.
The Vice-Commander reviews all promotions approved by the Quadrant Commander and either backs the approval or denies it. In the case of denying a promotion approval the Vice-Commander will leave an explanation.
The Commander-in-Chief reviews all promotions approved by the Vice-Commander and either backs the approval or denies it. In the case of denying a promotion approval the Commander-in-Chief will leave an explanation.
Upon approval by the Commander-in-Chief the promotions are finalized and automatically executed. All promoted officers receive an automated email informing them of their movement in rank. A list of promoted officers appears on the Departmental Updates Board and the Outpost's alert status changes to Blue.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
How do I get promoted?
If you're asking this question you're probably new to Outpost
10F. Your first promotion will be a junior promotion, so check the
requirements listed here.
-
I've been coming on a regular basis for months yet I have
not been promoted. What am I doing wrong?
We do what we can to ensure that the promotion lists are both
fair and complete. If you have met your required rank term but fail
to receive a promotion, please
contact your respective Sector Commander
for an explanation.
-
When are promotions issued?
Promotions are announced at the end of each calendar month. More
information can be found here.
-
I am a Department Senior Manager and I have been recommending
an officer for a senior promotion for the past several months. How
come he/she hasn't been promoted?
We require that all department Senior Managers submit along with
their senior promotion recommendations a list of things the officer
in question has done to deserve the rank. This could be a list of
facts, or even better, a list of facts with URLs to projects the
officer in question was responsible for. We do not make promotions
to senior rank simply because an officer, "has been doing a
good job" - we expect to be given good reasons or provided
with solid proof that the officer is ready.
