Main:

  1. What kind of a community is Outpost 10F?

    A global network comprising of a diverse variety of individuals who enjoy Science Fiction and Lord of the Rings. Founded in 1997, the Outpost's primary goal is to bring together the efforts, creativity, and enthusiasm of Sci-Fi and LotR fans from all over the world. Through participation, teamwork, and unique member talents, this site provides an environment parallel to that idealized in the Sci-Fi universe and LotR realm. Central to our goal is providing a means of communication between fans; our five chatrooms do just that. Each of these chatrooms varies in theme and hosts an array of functions intended to provide the visitor with a more enjoyable environment.

  2. What are the Prime Directives?

    The Prime Directives are the rules we expect all visitors and members to follow when participating in activities relating to Outpost 10F. Before one may join Outpost 10F we require that one reads and agrees to all eleven of the Prime Directives. They can be found here.

  3. What sort of other things can one be involved in besides chatting?

    There is the opportunity to join organized work teams called departments and assist with creating and managing various projects relevant to the Star Trek and Star Wars universes and the Lord of the Rings realm. Such projects are a great opportunity for those who would like the chance to showcase their creative talents and abilities. One such example would be our monthly trivia competition.

  4. Is the chat based towards one theme or another?

    Outpost 10F started in 1997, under the name "Ten Forward, an Interactive Star Trek Chat". Later when the chat expanded and became a true community, a Star Wars chat was added and the departments began to start up Star Wars projects. After Outpost 10F version 2 was released, the chat expanded even further with the addition of Alder Hill. August 2003, Alder Hill left the Outpost 10F community and have became their own entity. In April 2004, a Lord of the Rings chat, Minas Tirith, was added. Since then, Outpost 10F is based on Star Trek and Star Wars universe and the Lord of the Rings realm.

  5. Is there any interaction between the Star Trek, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings sides?

    People do attend all three chats, and work together in the various departments.

  2. How do I contact a certain officer?

    You can find their email addresses in the dossier system.

  3. Some part of OTF wont load or wont work, who do I contact?

    Address your emails to the InDev Director.

Chat Operations:

  1. Why isn't the chatboard self-refreshing?

    Very simple. It works better for us this way.

  2. How do you make the smiley faces?

    By using certain character codes, smileys appear on the chat screen.
    Visit the Smiley Database for the correct codes.

  3. Why do you let people see other peoples IP addresses, as it could lead to hacking?

    It is part of our ways to ensure security. They illustrate your chat identity.

  4. What is a Command Code?

    A Command Code is issued to every registered officer. It functions as a password which can be used to access certain areas of Outpost10F. The Ensign Command Code is issued upon registration. An officer promoted to a higher rank receives a Personalized Command Code.

  5. Can I change my command code in a more suitable one?

    Yes, your command code can be changed at any time using the Profile Management System

Side-Chat Operations:

  1. What does the Armory do?

    The armory is a special supplementary function that enables one with the required access requirements to use fictional weapons from the Sci-Fi universes for enjoyment purposes, or to remove a troublemaker from one of our chatrooms. One must hold the rank of at least Lieutenant before he or she is given access to the armory. More information about Armory levels can be found at the Armory Guidelines.

  2. What's that "yellow writing"?

    These are visible prints of armory actions.

  3. What does that Bar do?

    The virtual bar is a supplementary function that enables one to order virtual food or drink for oneself or fellow crewmembers. Each chatroom is equipped with its own themed virtual bar and special host character. The Ten Forward chatroom offers an additional bar function, that being the ability to order El Aurian fortune cookies - each containing one of 50 random messages. One must register with the site and obtain the Ensign Command Code before one is permitted to access this option.

  4. How do I use the Bar?

    Simple! The bar consist of a couple of possibilities. You can order your beverage there, listen to the MIDI-Jukebox, or keep track of your friend's login activities.

    All Bar options are fairly easy to use. Each option has it's own simple explanation should there be complications.

  5. What is a dossier?

    Outpost 10F allows you to create a file that contains information regarding yourself or your chat character. Such information includes: your age, residence, ICQ number, homepage, email address, personal photo, and much more. This file is stored on the OTF server and can be linked to your chat posts allowing chatroom occupants the ability to learn more about you.



  6. How do you make a dossier?

    Go to the Profile Management System and follow the instructions there.

  7. What's the Departmental Updates Board?

    The Dept. Updates Board contains messages from the executive of Outpost 10F's departments and admiralty. Check this board on a regular basis to remain informed of what's happening at the Outpost. Message priority is signified by color.

    • Green = Notification
    • Yellow = Important Notification
    • Red = Extremely Important Notification
    • Blue = Notification regarding end of the month procedures, such as Promotions


  8. What are the Ikonboard Forums?

    The Ikonboard Forums are forums where the members of Outpost 10F can post messages on subjects they wish to inform the rest of Outpost 10F about. Messages posted here can be concerning any topic so long as they follow our Prime Directives. Further guidelines on how to use the Ikonboard Forums can be found here.

  9. What does the Ship Alert Status signify?

    Outpost 10F condition is indicated by the Ship Alert Status. Status Explanations can be found at the Departmental Updates Boards. There are five different alerts:

    • Condition Green = No special circumstances.
    • Yellow Alert = Indicates a problem situation. There may be technical errors disrupting chat or security breaches.
    • Red Alert = Indicates a serious problem situation. Red Alerts are seldom initiated, except when there are major errors or security breaches.
    • Blue Alert = Indicates end of the month procedures, such as Promotions.
    • Black Alert = Time of global tragedy and mourning. Very rarely used indeed.

Promotions:

  1. What is the point of a promotional system?

    Fun, but also a way of maintaining order and a sign of respect.

    To coordinate and organize personnel within the site, a ranking system is utilized. As an officer works his or her way up the rank ladder, he or she will receive access to more functions and site utilities. Also involved in the advancement in rank is the ability to lead projects and departmental personnel.

  2. How do I get promoted?

    There are different kinds of promotions, like junior or senior promotions. All the information about how to get promoted and demands, can be found at the Promotion Information File.

  3. When are the promotions announced?

    Around the 1st of each month.

  4. I wasn't promoted this month, and I don't think it's fair. Who do I contact?

    If you feel you were overlooked last month, send in an email to the Quadrant Commander.

Departments:

  1. What is a Department? What different kind of Depts are there?

    To improve effectiveness and efficiency of all operations, Outpost 10F is managed and maintained through the combined efforts of various work groups called departments. Each department manages a specific area of Outpost 10F and strives to make their area of expertise the best it can be. By working through teams, we at Outpost 10F are able to share our thoughts, ideas, strategies, and abilities to accomplish more than any one individual could. We are proud to say many parts of Outpost 10F have been designed and implemented through the combined efforts of people across the entire globe.

    To maintain a high level of coordination and teamwork amongst our diverse membership, Outpost 10F's departments are composed of personnel from all of our site genres. Currently this includes Star Trek, Star Wars and LotR personnel.

  2. Why should I be involved in a Department?

    Departments provide officers a chance to work on their creative efforts, in various ways. More important, senior ranks can only be achieved by those who work for a department. Senior promotions are based on performance, not attendance.

  3. How do I join a department?

  4. What rank do have to hold to become a member of a department?

    To join a department, you must hold the rank of Lieutenant JG / CL3. However, some departments are not open to applications. Again, all the information can be found at the Department Information Page.
